Civic Engagement
According to recent estimates, unmarried
women are the largest growing non-voting
demographic in the country. To change this
disturbing statistic, NHCA continued its
nonpartisan voter outreach program for
unmarried women living in Manchester who
are unregistered or infrequent voters. In the
10 days before Election Day, 48 canvassers
and 70 volunteers reached out in person, by
phone and by mail to nearly 10,000 women
living on their own in Manchester and urged them to make their voices heard.
NHCA also sponsored an interfaith volunteer event with Righteous Indignation, Unitarian
Universalist Action Network, and Women of Faith. Over 50 people from the Christian,
Jewish, and Muslim faiths came together to celebrate and learn, and then joined with one
another to canvass in some of Manchester's most economically hard-hit areas.
NHCA and the NH League of Women Voters also launched
200,000 online ads that provided women with nonpartisan
information about how to register to vote and where to vote.
NHCA repeated its efforts to get single women out to vote in
Manchester's 2009 municipal election by reaching out to
5,000 women with the help of over a dozen canvassers. Due
in part to NHCA's tireless work to bring the traditionally
underrepresented single woman into every election the rate
of single women's participation in elections has been steadily
increasing.
Leadership Programs
NHCA offered two series of nonpartisan leadership workshops for women looking to hone
their skills. Ten women from Southern NH participated in the first series "Your Passion,
Your Leadership," which ran from February through April. Each workshop was informative,
interactive, and focused on building skills for leading advocacy and/or issue-based
campaigns in one's community. The second series "Running for Office" ran from April
through June. Twelve women (many of whom attended the first series) were trained in
various skills needed for running a campaign, including media training, fundraising, and
managing volunteers.
NHCA will also be offering two more leadership workshops for women in 2009. "Municipal
Government 101" will serve as an information session on how municipal government works
and will also provide all those who attend with an idea of how they can get involved and affect
policy. The second workshop being offered, "How the Federal Budget Works," will impart
knowledge on how the federal budget is set up so that those who attend will both be able to
understand the way the budget works more clearly and also possibly see areas where they
would like the government to change.
